What it is for

Respiratory protection is chosen by the contaminant: dust from sanding and brake work, mist from paint and solvent, or a spray from a pressure washer. A folding dust mask covers the first at the FFP2 level; a full-face shield covers splash and impact to the whole face, and is worn with a mask underneath rather than instead of one.

A mask only works if it seals. That means a clean-shaven face at the seal line, a nose clip bent to fit, and a mask that is replaced when it is damp or clogged rather than when it is visibly dirty. Keep a box at the bench; a mask in the stores is a mask that is not worn.
