What it is for

A cross-line laser does one job a spirit level cannot: it puts a reference on two walls at the same time, so a run of cabinets or a stud wall goes up in one pass instead of being checked piece by piece. The limit is the self-levelling range — past about 3° of tilt it stops levelling and starts flashing, which is a warning rather than a fault.

The 15 m working range is the indoor figure; in daylight the line is hard to see beyond a few metres, which is why the bracket and the detector matter more than the number on the box. Set it on a tripod or a bracket at the height you are working, not on the floor, and the line stops being something you have to duck under.
