What it is for

A door hinge is bought by length and thickness first, because the recess in the door edge is already cut: a 4-inch hinge will not drop into a 3-inch mortice, and a thin hinge in a deep mortice leaves the door hanging on the screws. Everything else — finish, ball bearings, fire rating — comes after the size.

Ball-bearing hinges are for heavy doors that are opened constantly, where the load should go into the bearing rather than the pin. Fire-rated hinges are thicker and matched to intumescent pads; on a fire door the pair has to be replaced as a set, not individually.
