What it is for

Nuts, bolts and washers are bought as an assortment for the same reason as screws: one missing washer stops the job, and the loose-bin price of a single washer is many times the price of the same washer in a sorted box. These are stainless steel and organised by thread and length in a lidded case.

The assortment is the useful way to buy them because the sizes actually used are not the sizes you would guess — M6 and M8 cover most domestic and workshop work, while the smaller sizes in a mixed box are there for the jobs where a bigger bolt will not fit. Washers are also sold as their own packs, because they are consumed faster than the bolts they go under.
