What it is for

Hex keys are the tools that round a socket head when they are made of the wrong steel, and the damage is done to the fastener, not the key. These are cut from CR-V steel and hardened through, so the short arm twists before the tip deforms — a failure you can see coming.

The folding holder keeps the sizes together and makes the key a lever, which is the point: for a recessed cap screw you often need more leverage than a bare key gives, and the holder is the difference between loosening it and rounding it.
